Håfa Adai!
My name is Bertina Balajadia Grajo, and I am a doctoral student from the island of Guam, currently residing in Oregon. I am pursuing my doctoral degree in the Department of Public Administration and am now in my second year of data collection for my research study titled:
"Empowering Pacific Islanders: Addressing Socio-Economic Disparities Among the Mariana Islands’ Communities Through Public Administration."
This study is part of my dissertation and reflects my deep commitment to understanding and addressing the unique challenges faced by our Chamorro and Refaluwasch communities living in the United States. The goal is to explore how people from the Mariana Islands perceive and access public services in the U.S., identify barriers, and examine how these services impact overall well-being and self-sufficiency.
Are you from the Mariana Islands and currently living in the U.S.?
Your voice and experiences are essential to this research.
We are especially interested in learning how aware our community is of state programs designed for Pacific Islanders, whether these resources are being used, and what barriers—such as stigma, accessibility, or cultural mismatch—might prevent their use. Your insights will help inform more effective, inclusive public services that truly reflect the needs of our people.
Purpose of the Research:
-
To assess awareness of state programs and services available to Pacific Islanders
-
To evaluate how often and how well these programs are being utilized
-
To identify barriers, including stigma or access issues, that prevent use of these resources
-
To understand how these programs support (or fail to support) the prosperity, health, and self-sufficiency of our community
If you are attending the Marianas Festival and identify as Chamorro or Refaluwasch, are 18 years or older, and currently live in the United States, I invite you to participate in this important study. Participation involves completing an online survey, with the possibility of brief follow-up questions. Please note that there is no compensation for participation.
For more information or to express interest, please email me at bgrajo@liberty.edu.
The survey link will be available starting August 29, 2025.
Si Yu’os Ma’åse’ for supporting this work and for sharing your voice to help empower our island communities.
