Learn to Paddle the Galaide
Just because we live in the cold, rainy Pacific Northwest doesn’t mean we can’t get on the water. For Chamorros, Refaluwasch, and Pacific Islanders, the ocean has always been more than just a body of water—it’s part of who we are. Our ancestors were master navigators and canoe builders, and paddling was not only a way of life but a deep expression of cultural identity, resilience, and unity. Here in Portland, we now have a rare opportunity to carry that legacy forward.
This is your chance to learn the art of traditional Chamorro paddling—to connect with your roots, your strength, and your community in a way that few have the opportunity to experience. It’s more than just learning to move a canoe; it’s about reclaiming space on the water, even far from home. You'll build relationships, share stories, and stand together with other Chamorros, Refaluwasch, and Pacific Islanders in cultural pride and solidarity.
Opportunities like this don’t come around often, and space is extremely limited. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of something powerful, meaningful, and unforgettable. The canoe is waiting—and so is your place in it.
Thank you to @oregonmetro for making this possible.
We are so touched by the response from our community. As of July 1, 2025, all spots have been filled.
BUT — don’t worry! You can still complete the survey below to join the waiting list and be the first to hear about future paddling opportunities.
